How To Write A Good Research Paper: Suggestions For College Students

When it comes to writing a research paper, there are a number of logical steps that you should follow in order to make sure that it has been done properly. If you are new to the world of writing research papers, or you just need a little push in the right direction, here is what you need to know in order to make sure your paper is the best it can be:

  • Pick your topic
  • Ensure that your choice of subject is something which both interests and challenges you. The attitude you have towards the paper can end up determining how much enthusiasm and effort you put into your research and writing. Make sure that your topic has plenty of material available for you to do your source research from.

  • Get your information
  • Do an extensive amount of reading and investigating to get all of the material you are going to need. It is much better to have too much available than not enough. You can always whittle it down later to what is most relevant.

  • Make your thesis statement
  • Use one sentence to make it clear exactly what your thesis statement is going to be. This part of the process may take some time as it will require you to do some critical thinking so don't expect to nail it on the first try.

  • Draft your outline
  • Write down all of the points you want to include, even if they are just in rough form. Organize your outline into sections that include the introduction, body paragraphs, and the conclusion. This outline is not written in stone. It can be reorganized at a later point if needed. Get all of your notes together and grouped accordingly to section.

  • Write the first draft
  • Leave the introduction except for your thesis statement until the very end. Start with the first point you have listed in your outline and go forward from there. Include all of the information you want to present for each point.

  • Start again
  • Now that you have completed your research, go back to the beginning and write your introduction. Read through each section to be sure that you have not left anything out, and that all of the information follows a logical progression from one paragraph to the next.

  • Edit and proofread
  • Double-check all of your facts and figures. Take out any words that are unneccesary. Read through the paper again and again until you are certain that there are no errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation. Have a friend read through your final draft and hand it in!
